The Concept of Beauty

I posted a video to my Facebook page over a year ago titled, “How The Blind See Beauty” and to this day I can watch it and it is emotional , almost (still!). The video is a discussion with four blind people who talk about their definition of beauty. I don’t know that I have found a truer description of beauty.

“To me beauty is character, personality, the way people carry their self…basically it’s just the way the person is…and some people can be very pretty and beautiful inside just by the way they…carry their self…or how they are concerned about my situation…” – Virginia Romero

“I feel that losing my sight has been a blessing…which means i don’t care what nationality somebody is, I don’t care how tall somebody is, I don’t care how big or small they are…a person is beautiful because they are true to themselves.” -Sean Gorecki

What stood out to me is the idea that beauty is character. It’s not about what you are wearing or how perfectly you can apply makeup or how poised you may seem. It all comes down to how you treat others, how you allow your influence or your position to bless those around you or bless those who need it most. I think there is a way for each and every person to shine their light on this world and be a positive force. It could be as simple as a smile or giving a genuine compliment. It could be as simple as changing the dialogue you have toward or about others (or even yourself!) and speaking kindly and with compassion. And through all that is going on in our world…I think we need that.
